Utility regulatory staff are expected to prepare license amendment requests and other regulatory submittals that utilize risk-informed information and must meet Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) guidance, including Regulatory Guide 1.174 and Regulatory Guide 1.177. The regulatory staff must incorporate input from other utility organizations, such as the Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) staff, to ensure the submittal meets all regulatory expectations and will be accepted by the NRC for review. This course provides participants with the knowledge required to review PRA inputs and compare them to the regulatory guidance to assure the submittal iscomplete. The course will also provide participants with a working knowledge of PRA technology, terminology, and methods sufficient to understand the regulatory guidance and to successfully interface with the utility PRA staff to prepare licensing actions. In addition, the course will review the PRA requirements for certain risk-informed licensing actions, such as risk-informed Technical Specifications improvements, Notices of Enforcement Discretion, and 10 CFR 50.69 adoption.
This course is intended for utility licensing and regulatory affairs personnel, supervisors, managers and executives desiring a more comprehensive understanding of PRA terminology and methods used for risk informed NRC submittals. This is not a highly technical course for the PRA practitioner, but rather a conceptual treatment of PRA fundamentals as they relate to risk informed changes to plant licensing bases. It is assumed that participants have a working knowledge of NRC interface and basic plant and systems knowledge as obtained through typical plant orientation training programs.
